Bear this in mind: it is courteous before meeting a perfect stranger to exchange addresses (as a token of trust), but it is sensible to ensure that you have the other person's real name and real address before you meet and that you let someone else know where you are going or whom you are entertaining in your home. Anyone who says he cannot give you his address because he "is moving" (or some other reason) is not to be trusted. In that eventuality it is reasonable to expect him to give you BOTH addresses, his old as well as his new, not to use that as an excuse to withhold them. Engaging in any sport is entirely at your own risk, therefore take reasonable precautions. It is well known that sports injuries occur due to six reasons: through using poor equipment, being stiff or over-tired, not having your heart in it, through not having the requisite skills or not being fit. The British School of Osteopathy spells out the last of these causes by advising you to get fit to play a sport and NOT to play a sport to get fit. It is therefore sensible to attend a gym to get fit first, and then a wrestling club to learn basic tumbling skills required in a sport like wrestling. Household carpets (especially those made of nylon) inflict mat burns very quickly so remember that, if the skin is ruptured in this way, you may be at risk of HIV infection. If you do not put a proper dressing over the exposed area AT ONCE you should STOP WRESTLING immediately. It is sensible therefore to carry first-aid equipment in your sports bag always. Further guidance on the correct way to treat injuries is given in Wrestling for Gay Guys by Donald Black. If some injuries are not treated or incorrectly treated, minor injuries can become major injuries. Therefore, read his guidance before you wrestle. The usual way for wrestlers to signal to their opponent that they want to stop (in many styles) or to submit (in submission style same thing) is to tap their opponent three times anywhere on his body. Ensure that your opponent is aware of this and will abide by it. Also agree with him beforehand which wrestling style you are engaging in and with styles like submission (or combined boxing & wrestling, shooto, etc.) where there are no universal rules laid down (or differing rules) agree what will be permitted and what not, and put it down in writing before you begin. If your opponent is a sensible person he will be reassured by your doing so. It is not advisable to use choke or strangle (sleeper) holds unless both wrestlers have been trained in the correct and safe way to apply these holds for the reasons explained on our Problems Page on this web-site. If you are frightened of getting hurt through wrestling this may be an unrealistic fantasy. Loads of guys wrestle all the time without getting injured (apart from some minor scratches), so why are you frightened? Donald Black explains the reasons for your fear in his book Wrestling for Gay Guys and how you can cure this fear. Have you wondered about gay guys who arrange to wrestle but never turn up to wrestle? It is very disappointing, frustrating and infuriating. Why do they do it?
