A NEW BREED OF GAY MEN? lacking aggression, and even for being spineless but, according to Power Books, that may all change with the publication of their book Wrestling for Gay Guys by Donald Black. The author says that his own timidity, fear of violence and lack of aggressiveness which afflict many gay men, were cured for him at the Tavistock Clinic in London and he now passes on the method used in his new book so that other gay men can benefit from it. "Gay men have simply accepted that that is the way they are and think that nothing can be done about it but we now know that it is not integral to homosexuality - these are simply neuroses which can easily be cured. "This could mean gay men participating more in body-contact sports like wrestling, rugby and judo in future, pastimes that they have tended to avoid", says Mr Black, "And these types of ag- gressive sports are a valuable way of expressing one's anger safely. On the other hand many gay men need to believe that the way they are - timid and fearful of other men - is "normal" for them, as is homosexuality; and this could mean them passing up a wonderful opportunity to become more fulfilled and happier people." "Nowadays it is generally accepted that homosexuality starts in the womb due to the foetus receiving oestrogen when it usually receives testosterone (in the case of a male foetus). It was Günther Dörner who discovered this when he injected pregnant rats with oestrogen. He explained that an illness (pathology) could also cause a change in the amount of oestrogen but he did not explain if there were any other ways the change could occur in humans. "Another researcher, Dr Richard Green found that couples who long for a daughter and are disappointed when a son is born, dress the boy in girl's clothes in extreme cases, but with other disappointed parents the influence to be feminine can be more subtle. In the club I ran in London in the 1970s to teach gay men to wrestle I asked some of the members what their parents thought of their learning to wrestle, but they all said they had not told their parents because they believed their parents would not approve of them wrestling! "Unfortunately, if a son hides from his parents that he is participating in wrestling this can cause a classic guilt complex which creates further problems for the son. If one doesn't understand what is happening it is very difficult to teach them to wrestle and they simply give it up to escape the anxiety the guilt complex causes. "The human body excretes adrenalin in anticipation of sports competition, it secretes digestive juices in anticipation of a meal; could it be that, if a woman desperately expects a daughter, her body secretes extra oestrogen during pregnancy? This would explain why some parents who are disappointed with the sex of a son when they wanted a daughter, expect him to behave as the daughter they had wanted. "The cause of homosexuality has not been conclusively established but I believe parents who long for a daughter when the wife is carrying a male foetus may have contributed to the homosexual development of their offspring!" THE GAY STRAITJACKETDonald Black goes on,"Gay men who oblige their parents by becoming what the parents want them to be, end up feeling oppressed by society: only a lot more oppressed than they actually are. "Many gay men have a problem with expressing their anger: Their parents have not allowed them to express their anger because, if they did, they might be angry with their parents! Not being able to express one's anger is like living in a straitjacket. "The gay men have to put up with anger from other people but find it difficult to assert themselves with their own anger or aggres- sion when required. They have to suffer other men's anger and there is nothing they can do about it! This is a terrible position to be in. Not being able to do what other men can do leaves them feeling inferior and lowers their self-esteem because other people around them can express their anger and aggression but many gay men can't. "My book shows gay men how to overcome all these, and many other, problems. My whole life changed and improved immeasurably as a result of what I learned at the Tavistock Clinic and I would like others to benefit from it too", says Donald Black, author of Wrestling for Gay Guys.
